Serena Williams is an easy roll model, not only for little girls who want to be great tennis players but for everyone. She puts on a fabulous Nike outfit, picks up a racket and does the damn thing everytime, win or lose... but mostly win. I often find myself asking myseld in situations from applying for jobs or talking to a guy at a bar "What would Serena do?"
Storytime: One night when I found myself out with a bunch of couples, yet again, I spent most of the time trying to find someone cute enough to lock eyes with. No such luck until I spot a handsome gent playing bocce ball across the bar. I of course ask my guy friends after a few drinks if I should go talk to him, then didn’t. Then asked again, then did nothing...again. And when I went up to my dear friend Reggie and asked him what he thought I should do for the third time, he quickly responded with “ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN THIS, T!”
Roasted.
Long story short, I never talked to Bocce Boy, but I did realize something important. We all spend so much time wondering if we should just go for it, asking our entire friend group, our mom, our therapist and trusted barista, what we should do next. Should I pursue the cutie across the bar? Should I invest in one of those cool Purple mattresses? Should I ask my boss for a raise? Should I keep guessing or actually do something about it?
I am going to tell you what Reggie told me; anything is better than guessing and asking people that have no say in the matter because frankly, your guess is as good as their's.
Should you apply for a car loan? Ask the bank.
Should you ask him/her how they feel about you? Ask him/her.
Should you start a new sport? Ask a coach.
So the next time you’re wondering if you should do something, I encourage you to stop and ask yourself what it is you want. Identify the best case scenario and then the nightmare and then ask yourself if never knowing is better than the latter. My philosophy is, if you don’t get the answer you were looking for, or even no response at all (you'll survive, I promise), anything is better than asking “What if.”
Stop wasting your time wondering if everything is going to work out or not. Serena Williams doesn't ask people if they think she should try and be the best (and most stylish) tennis player in the world, she just picks up a racket and does the damn thing. So do the damn thing or shut up about it.
