Millennials may not have invented self care but BOY have we made it the essential life skill that it is today. We have influenced Generation Y to chill out and take a break and taught Gen-Z the value of making yourself a priority. But I will admit that I find myself confusing twisting "self care" into an excuse to not make dinner and go Panera Bread instead. Knowing that I am going to have big day and treating myself to a coffee is self care... buying two iced coffees simply because it's a Tuesday is indulging. They're different.
Self care is different for everyone. It can definitely be taking a day off, buying a $12 bath bomb or simply writing in a journal. But do not kid yourself, true self care is facing whatever it is you’re escaping from.
Life can be about challenging ourselves and sometimes dealing with the bad stuff with over priced magazines and essential oil bath bombs. But it also has to be about getting out of the tub and facing the real issue. It’s looking your self doubt, impostor syndrome and insecurities right in the eye and telling them to “F-off.”
Jumping is hard, not knowing the outcome of your actions is even harder, dealing with that uncertainty however you deal best is perfectly fine as well. The key is identifying the best case scenario while also identifying the nightmare and reminding yourself that you are going to be okay no matter the outcome.
But don’t think of self care as means to prolong the actual situation you are facing, use it to recenter, refocus, recharge and build the momentum you need to be successful. Because even though it is the worst sentence in the English language, and I’m sure many others; Everything is going to be okay.
